Art Holiday Travel and Vacation information for Norfolk

A county of England, lying on the German Ocean; bounded by Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, and Suffolk. It extends 70 miles in length and 40 in breadth. It contains 33 hundreds, 1 city, 32 market towns, and 660 parishes. The face of this county varies less than in most tracts of equal extent in England. Not one hill of any considerable height is to be seen in the whole county; yet, in most parts, its surface is broken into gentle swells and depressions. At the western extremity is a considerable tract of flat fenny land, which is part of the Bedford Level; and, on the east, a narrow tract of marshes runs from the sea, near Yarmouth, to some distance up the country. Between Lincolnshire and the western extremity, is a broad but shallow arm of the sea, called the Wash. [Barclay's Complete and Universal English Dictionary, 1842]

Some marvellously timeless and unspoilt parts, good range of beach resorts, interesting places to visit; and there's boating on the Broads North Norfolk has a great deal of unspoilt charm, untouristy and traditional-feeling, with an appealingly individual character, and a real sense of style about even the simplest buildings. This coast gives you refreshingly broad sweeps of sea, saltings and sky, and often hundreds of birds in sight at a time, big enough and distinctive enough to excite even non-ornithologists.

There's a real get-away-from-it-all feel, and inland too, this part has the same sort of appeal. Up here, Hunstanton and Cromer are civilised seaside resorts with a good deal of individuality, and there are many attractive smaller places.Further down, the coast is dotted with beach resorts, some large and lively (most obviously, Great Yarmouth), some relaxed and more individual.Norwich is a distinguished yet lively cathedral city, not overly touristy, yet with plenty to see. Highlights elsewhere include Sandringham (less grand than other Royal residences - people like its more personal feel), Blickling Hall, Holkham Hall, Houghton Hall and Felbrigg Hall; besides these great houses, there's a very broad spread of other things well worth tracking down, from the unique water gardens at South Walsham to the dinosaur park at Weston Longville or the prehistory at Cockley Cley and Grimes Graves, from the elderly fighting vehicles at Weybourne to the Welney wildfowl centre. Many of the most enjoyable places to visit appeal to children as well as adults. Boat trips from Blakeney to see the seals sum up the timeless simplicity of North Norfolk's appeal. Other enjoyable family outings include The Village at Burgh St Margaret, the tropical centre in Great Yarmouth, and Bressingham's steam museum and gardens. Among the many wildlife, zoo and farm parks here, those at Filby, Banham and Snettisham stand out. Steam enthusiasts have plenty to keep them occupied at Aylsham, Sheringham, Wells next the Sea, Forncett St Mary and (our own favourite) Thursford Green. On a smaller scale, families very much enjoy the craft centre outside Hoveton.Away from the N, the countryside is not in itself a big draw - much is flat and repetitive. It's excellent for cycling, though, with quiet lanes, attractive villages and country churches, and fair views (and lots of roadside snowdrops in spring). Driving along the twisty coastal A149 is pleasant out of season - though not much fun in summer. The best parts - the winding rivers and reed-fringed meres of the Broads - are much better seen from a boat than from land. Broads cruising is generally a week-long affair, but could be worked into a short-stay holiday; the boats nowadays have every mod con and are easy for even a novice to handle, but it's a chilly pastime until summer's well established. Wroxham is a popular centre for this, though one of the quieter bases in the N might make a better choice for just a day on the water.
