 Although sandy beaches beckon at Bude, Looe and Carylon Bay (and Whitsand Bay) they are about 1 hour by car. Dartmoor is about 30 mins excellent for walking and picnics. Tavistock is 8 miles, a pretty town with an interesting pannier market daily (except sun/mon).
For an evening out try "Carpenters ARMS" about 3 miles into Tamar Valley. Plymouth is always worth a visit (parking free on sundays) lunch at Derrys only £4.95! Shop or walk on the Hoe and imagine Drake! Another highlight is a visit to Trago mills for the adults, a huge warehouse at wholesale prices!
